Default Roof Shingles 1.5 years old

Hello, this roof is only 1.5 years old. Is this a new type of shingle or installation that I am not aware of. I have never seen shingles like this except for when they are old and in need of being replaced. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Man that looks U-G-L-Y!

Looks more like some type of rolled out "shingle look" type of strip than actual "shingles".

Most shingles are 3 feet long and have three tabs, I once saw a shingle roof which the shingles were the standard 3 foot long shingles, but single tab (looked, let's just say "strange").

BUT THOSE ... those don't look like 3 foot long shingles ... how long were those things?

The way they are curving up and down it looks like a strip rolled out across the roof with a "shingle effect" placed on it.

Never have seen that before, wonder if it is "approved"?

I have never seen that type of roofing either. Jerry what are your thoughts on the spacing between the tabs. There are lacking granules. The sun in utah will eat those up in a few years.

I have seen a similar shingle in my area. It is a fake architectural shingle, the ones I found were nothing more than a 3-tab shingle with an extra glob of asphalt to give it the appearance of the more expensive architectural shingle. The ones that I have found have all had a melted appearance. The glob of asphalt had melted or softened in the sun and gravity took over.

I've seen many of the cheap architectural shingles which are three tab shingles with extra pieces glued on, and those extra piece can come off (especially in "high wind events"), but those are, at most, single tab shingles with extra pieces glued on, I can see where some of the extra pieces have broken off.

My question then becomes: are those 3 feet long, like single tab shingles, or are they longer, like rolled strips?

They do not look like the weight of even standard 3-tab shingles, so I don't expect they would hold up too much at all.

You can see some butt joints in the first photo. Still can't tell if they are regular length shingles tho. Definitely ugly. I've never seen them...and don't want to. Are they supposed to be mimicking a slate roof?

Yep, same thing I saw, and, depending on 'how close up' the photo was taken, they may be over 3' long as there are no foot long tabs to put them in perspective.

I'm guessing, at best, they started life as "single tab" 3' long shingles.

Ahhh, I think I've found them. I believe they are GAF Capstone "designer" shingles. See.. GAF Materials Corp - Residential and Commercial Roofing
...towards the bottom of the page.

If that's them then, yes, regular shingle, supposedly 40yr.

    Richard,

I clicked that link and there is nothing like that on there???

Added with edit: I take that back, I just had not gone deep enough into the photo to pull it up close enough to see it - yes, it does look like those. The problem is that link only takes you to the first page, then you have to click your way back several pages to get a good look at them.

Jeez, the front page says one thing, the install instructions say something else.

It could have been caused by improper attic ventilation. What part of the country is it in and how has the weather been the last 1.5 yrs?

Although I'm not familiar with the Capstone shingle (it is U-G-L-Y), the single tab "laminated" shingles, are a superior product to any 3-tab shingles on the market today.

They are the Elk Capstone Shingles and are a premium high dollar material.

They look nice on a steep pitched roof.

Now, GAF/ELK is the company that handles them since the buyout/merger.

They have something like a 130 mph wind rating when 6 nailed per the manufacturers specifications.

Those shingles are commonly referred to as "shadow line" shingles. I would not venture on who the manufacturer might be.

Shadow line patterns are also avaible in synthetic single py (membranes) but these (as shown) definitely are not single plies.

I showed the identical shingles with a bundle and the brand to prove what they were for accurate identification purposes.

You should have clicked on the photos.

They give a very unique Cotswold Cottage effect on the right roof with the proper pitch.

The single ply membranes with the shingle patterns that I know of, are from Cooley and IB Roofing Systems. Probably several others jumped on board too, but I have not checked out Fibertite or Duro-Last recently, amongs others.

I'm sure these photos are of GAF's Capstone in Moss Rose.

They don't look too bad on a steeper pitch and from a distance...

I'll bet not. I used some scallop style once that were $350.00 a square.

I am wondering though, isn't this actually SLATELINE from GAF? I was hunting for pics on the web, as i really liked the Capstone, and need to decide what to replace my roof with, so wanted pics other than manufac pics. I thought the Slateline was ultra ugly too, just a regrettable product! But I don't think this is the same CAPSTONE that is out now as advertised Aug 2011?? It would seem to be the noxious Slateline... I believe..

Yes, the Capstone of today at least, looks very quaint and warm, cheerily unfettered with boring angles and drabness.

SO DO GAF SHINGLES MELT?? i APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT ON THAT!
